Memory Care
Dementia-Focused Care That Creates Calm and Connection
Caring for someone with advanced Alzheimer’s disease or dementia at the end of life requires more than standard hospice care. Patients with cognitive decline experience the world differently, and they need interventions designed specifically for how their brains process comfort, emotion, and connection.
James River’s Memory Care Comfort Program combines expert hospice care with therapeutic tools proven to reduce distress in dementia patients:
- Non-Pharmacological Comfort Tools:
- Weighted blankets and lavender-scented stuffed animals that provide calming pressure and aromatherapy
- Music therapy using personalized playlists that unlock long-term memory and spark moments of joy
- Fidget mats and tactile tools that keep hands busy and minds soothed
- Aromatherapy with lavender and other calming scents proven to reduce agitation and sleeplessness
- Memory boxes, photos, and connection tools that preserve identity and dignity
- Specialized Team Training Every member of our hospice team receives ongoing education in dementia-specific care techniques, including: Validation therapy and empathetic communication, redirection strategies for behavioral symptoms, understanding triggers and de-escalation techniques, supporting families through the unique grief of dementia
- Comfort-First, Medication-Sparing Approach We prioritize sensory and emotional interventions before adding medications, creating calm through touch, sound, scent, and familiar comfort rather than sedation whenever possible. This program is designed to:
- Calm restlessness and reduce anxiety
- Ease agitation without heavy medication
- Create moments of recognition and joyful connection
- Support families navigating the heartbreak of advanced dementia
- Preserve dignity and identity even as memory fades
- Who Benefits from Memory Care Hospice Patients with advanced Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia, frontotemporal dementia, or other progressive cognitive conditions who are approaching end of life.
Veterans Support
Honoring Those Who Served with the Care They Deserve
Veterans who served our country deserve end-of-life care that recognizes their service, understands military culture, and addresses the unique physical and emotional challenges many veterans face.
Our Veterans Hospice Program provides:
- Recognition of Military Service. We honor each veteran’s service branch, rank, and sacrifice with ceremonies, commemorations, and the respect their service deserves.
- Trauma-Informed Care. Many veterans experience combat-related trauma, PTSD, or service-connected pain that resurfaces at end of life. Our team is trained to recognize and respond to these needs with sensitivity and expertise.
- Coordination with VA Benefits. We help veterans and families navigate VA hospice benefits, coordinate with VA medical centers, and ensure veterans receive all the support and recognition they’ve earned.
- Support for Military Families. We understand that military families face unique challenges, and we provide specialized support for spouses, children, and fellow veterans who are navigating loss.
Because service to our country doesn’t end at discharge, and neither does our commitment to those who served.
