Ways Volunteers Support Patients and Families
Volunteer support is shaped around what each patient and family actually needs. No two situations are the same, and our volunteers are flexible, attentive, and guided by the care team to make sure their time is spent where it will be most meaningful.
Ways James River volunteers support patients and families include:
- Companionship visits sitting with patients for conversation, shared silence, reading aloud, listening to music, or simply being a warm and familiar presence during the day
- Caregiver respite giving primary family caregivers a dedicated window of time to step away, rest, run errands, or simply breathe without worry while their loved one is in good hands
- Errand support including grocery runs, prescription pickups, and other practical tasks that ease the logistical load on families managing caregiving alongside everyday life
- Meal support providing or arranging meals for patients and family members during a time when cooking and daily routines may feel impossible to maintain
- Assistance with correspondence helping patients write letters, record messages, or communicate with loved ones in ways that feel meaningful and leave something behind
- Legacy and life review support sitting with patients who wish to share their stories, memories, and reflections, an experience that many patients find deeply settling and profoundly worthwhile
- Administrative and clerical support assisting the hospice team with behind-the-scenes tasks that keep care coordination running smoothly
- Bereavement support reaching out to families after a loss with cards, calls, or visits that let them know they are still held in mind and not forgotten
Part of a Whole-Person Care Team
James River volunteers are integrated members of the hospice care team, not a separate layer of service operating independently. They communicate with the care team, follow the patient’s care plan, and report observations that may be relevant to the patient’s clinical or emotional wellbeing.
When a volunteer notices that a patient seems more withdrawn than usual, that a family caregiver appears to be struggling, or that something in the home environment has changed, that information reaches the appropriate team member. Volunteers are the eyes and ears of the care team in the spaces between clinical visits, and that role is taken seriously.
The full hospice team at James River includes the Medical Director, registered nurses, certified nursing aides, social workers, chaplains, and volunteers, each bringing a different and necessary contribution to the whole. How Volunteers are Trained and Supported
James River volunteers do not simply show up and figure it out. Every volunteer completes a comprehensive training program before they ever enter a patient’s home, covering everything they need to serve patients and families with confidence, sensitivity, and care.
Training topics include:
- The nature of hospice care and what patients and families are experiencing emotionally, physically, and spiritually during this time
- Communication skills for conversations with seriously ill patients, grieving family members, and caregivers who may be exhausted or overwhelmed
- Professional boundaries and conduct within the care setting, including how to be genuinely present without overstepping the volunteer role
- Safety and confidentiality requirements that protect patients, families, and volunteers throughout every interaction
- Recognizing and reporting concerns so that any changes in a patient’s condition or home environment are communicated to the clinical team promptly and appropriately
Volunteers are supervised and supported by the James River care team throughout their service.
Interested in Becoming a James River Volunteer?
Hospice volunteering is one of the most meaningful forms of community service a person can offer. It requires no medical background, no clinical training, and no particular professional credential. It requires presence, compassion, reliability, and a willingness to show up for people during one of the hardest seasons of their lives.
If you are interested in serving as a volunteer with James River Home Health & Hospice, we would love to hear from you. Our volunteers come from all walks of life and all age groups. What they share is a genuine desire to make a difference for patients and families in their community, and the commitment to follow through on that desire with consistency and care.
